The Pain of Talking on the Phone
Let’s be honest. Most of us hate making phone calls. Calling a business to ask a simple question feels like a chore. You have to wait on hold. You listen to bad music for ten minutes. Then, a person finally picks up, and you have to explain what you want.
Things get even worse when you try to cancel a service. Companies make it very hard to leave. They put you through a loop of questions. They try to trick you into staying. It is frustrating and it wastes your time.
Google knows this. That is why they are working on a new feature. They want Gemini, their smart AI assistant, to make these annoying phone calls for you.
It sounds like a dream come true. But wait. There is one type of call where I draw the line. I will never let an AI handle it.
How Google Gemini Wants to Help You
Google is always finding new ways to put AI into our phones. We already have tools that let Gemini write texts, organize notes, and search the web. Now, Google wants Gemini to talk on the phone for us.
Imagine this. You need to book a table at a busy restaurant. Or you need to ask a local shop if they have a specific item in stock. Instead of you making the call, you just tell Gemini what you need.
Your phone makes the call. Gemini talks to the business using a natural, human-sounding voice. It asks the questions. It listens to the answers. Then, it gives you the final update.
Google actually tested an early version of this years ago called Google Duplex. It booked hair salon appointments and restaurant tables like magic. Now, with Gemini getting much smarter, Google is ready to bring this back in a big way on future phones like the Pixel 11.
For simple tasks, this feature is amazing. It saves us time. It saves us from awkward social interactions. But we need to set some ground rules.
Where I Draw the Line
Gemini can talk to a restaurant host or a store clerk. That is fine. But I will never let Gemini make personal phone calls for me.
What do I mean by personal calls? I mean talking to my family, my close friends, or dealing with important human moments.
Think about it. Would you want your mom to pick up the phone, say hello, and hear an AI robot talking to her? No! That feels cold and weird. Relationships need real human connection. Even a quick check-in call with a friend loses all its meaning if an AI does the talking.
Here are the types of calls I will keep for myself:
- Talking to family members and relatives.
- Catching up with close friends.
- Sensitive medical conversations with a real doctor.
- Any situation that requires genuine human emotion and empathy.
AI is a great tool for chores. But talking to the people we love is not a chore. We should keep it that way.
The Good and Bad of AI Phone Calls
Let us look at the pros and cons of letting Gemini make business calls for you. It helps to see both sides before this feature arrives on your phone.
The Good Points:
- Saves time: You do not have to wait on hold for twenty minutes.
- Reduces stress: If you hate talking to strangers on the phone, the AI does it for you.
- Multitasking: Gemini can make a booking while you focus on your work.
The Bad Points:
- Privacy worries: Your phone is sharing details with an AI system.
- Misunderstandings: The AI might misunderstand a complicated business policy.
- The human touch is gone: Sometimes, talking to a real person gets you a better deal or faster help.
What Comes Next for Android Users?
Smartphones are changing fast. Features that look like science fiction today become normal parts of our daily lives tomorrow. Soon, letting your phone make a quick call to check store hours will feel as normal as sending a text message.
When this feature drops, I will definitely use it for boring tasks. I will let Gemini deal with customer service lines and store schedules. It will give me back hours of my week.
Just remember to keep the human touch where it matters. Let the robot handle the boring business calls. Keep the real phone calls for the people who actually care about you.
